How to Get Your Private Key from Wallet Solana: Phantom, Solflare, Backpack
A quick guide to exporting your private key from the most popular solana wallets: Phantom, Solflare, and Backpack.
First, here’s what you need to know: a private key is a secret alphanumeric code that grants full access and control over the funds in a wallet. It’s what allows you to send transactions from your wallet, like transferring tokens or NFT. Only whoever holds the private key can sign and authorize those transactions.
Your private key is also what generates your public key. The public key is linked to your wallet address and is what others can see and use to send you tokens or NFT, but it does not give them access to your funds.
Warning: Your private key should never be shared. If anyone gets access to it, they have full control over your wallet and can drain all your funds.

Why Would You Need the Private Key from a wallet on Solana?
Given how much access a private key provides, and that you should never share it with anyone, why would you need to export it? Below, we cover the specific situations where you’ll actually need it.
Restoring or Accessing Your wallet on a New Device or App
If you want to use your wallet on a new device, app, or software (say, switching from a mobile wallet to a desktop wallet), you’ll need to export the private key to import the wallet into the new environment. This comes in handy when changing devices or accessing your wallet from multiple places.
Migrating to a Different Type of wallet
If you decide to switch wallet types (for example, moving from a browser wallet like MetaMask to a hardware wallet like Ledger), you can export your private key to transfer your funds to the new wallet without losing access.
Backing Up Your Funds
Exporting your private key lets you create a backup of your wallet. Storing it securely (offline, on paper, or in a password manager) ensures that if you ever lose access to your device, you can restore your wallet at any time.
Key Warnings When Exporting a Private Key
Security
Your private key is extremely sensitive. If anyone gets hold of it, they have full control over your funds and can drain your wallet with no way to recover them. Never share your private key with anyone, and never store it somewhere insecure.
Phishing and Scams
Many crypto scams work by tricking users into handing over their private keys through fake sites or apps. Only export your private key when absolutely necessary, and always make sure you’re in a trusted environment.
Alternatives to Exporting Your Private Key
Seed Phrase: In many cases, instead of exporting the private key directly, you can use the seed phrase (recovery phrase).
This phrase, typically 12 or 24 words, can be used to restore your wallet across devices and platforms. It’s a safer, more manageable way to back things up.
The key difference from a private key is that the seed phrase lets you export all wallets under a single account. Instead of importing 10 private keys (one per wallet) on a new device, you just enter the seed phrase and every wallet opens at once.
That said, the Seed Phrase is just as sensitive and should never be shared with anyone, since it gives access to every asset stored in that account.
