Epoch

What Is an Epoch in Solana?

An epoch is a fixed time period in the Solana network during which a specific set of validators produces blocks and staking rewards are calculated. Epochs on Solana last approximately 2 to 3 days (around 432,000 slots), though the exact duration can vary slightly based on network conditions.

What Happens at the End of an Epoch

At the end of each epoch, several things occur: staking rewards are distributed to validators and their delegators, the validator schedule for the next epoch is calculated, and any changes to stake delegations take effect. If you stake SOL and wait for the epoch to complete, your rewards are added to your staked balance at the epoch boundary. Newly delegated staking also becomes active at the start of the next epoch.

Epochs and Staking

Staking on Solana is epoch-based: if you delegate SOL mid-epoch, your stake becomes active and starts earning rewards at the beginning of the next epoch. Similarly, if you undelegate (deactivate) your stake, the SOL becomes available for withdrawal at the start of the following epoch. This creates a predictable cadence for staking operations and reward collection.

How to Track the Current Epoch

You can see the current Solana epoch and its progress on any Solana block explorer. Solana Explorer shows the current slot and epoch progress in the dashboard. Knowing where you are in an epoch is useful for timing staking and unstaking operations and for estimating when your next reward distribution will occur. Solscan also displays the current epoch number and percentage of slots completed on its main dashboard.

FAQ

What is an epoch in Solana?

An epoch is a fixed time period (~2-3 days) in the Solana network during which staking rewards are calculated and a set of validators produces blocks. Rewards are distributed at each epoch boundary.

How long is a Solana epoch?

A Solana epoch lasts approximately 432,000 slots, which works out to roughly 2 to 3 days. The exact duration varies slightly based on network conditions and slot timing.

How does staking relate to epochs?

Staking on Solana is epoch-based. Newly delegated SOL becomes active at the start of the next epoch. Rewards are distributed at the end of each epoch. Undelegated stake becomes withdrawable at the epoch boundary.

How do you find the current Solana epoch?

Check any Solana block explorer such as Solana Explorer or Solscan. The current epoch number and progress as a percentage of slots completed are typically shown on the main dashboard.
