What Is Solana?
Solana is a high-performance layer-1 blockchain designed for fast, low-cost transactions. It was founded by Anatoly Yakovenko and launched in March 2020. SOL is the native token used to pay transaction fees and participate in network validation.
How Solana Works
Solana’s main technical innovation is Proof of History (PoH), a mechanism that timestamps transactions before they are included in a block. Combined with Proof of Stake consensus, this allows the network to process thousands of transactions per second at fees typically below $0.01. The trade-off is a more centralized validator set compared to older networks.
The Solana Ecosystem
Solana hosts a large ecosystem of DeFi protocols, NFT marketplaces, and token launchpads. Raydium and Orca are the primary DEXes. Magic Eden is the leading NFT marketplace. pump.fun became the dominant meme coin launchpad. The ecosystem also includes Solana-specific tools like Solana Explorer and Solscan for on-chain data.
SOL as a Network Token
SOL is used to pay transaction fees and is staked by validators who secure the network. Delegators can stake SOL with validators to earn staking rewards without running a node themselves. Unlike some chains, Solana does not burn fees — they are collected by validators.

No. They are competing blockchains with different architectures. Solana prioritizes speed and low fees. Ethereum prioritizes decentralization and has a larger developer ecosystem and DeFi total value locked.
Solana suffered multiple network outages in 2022 and was significantly impacted by the collapse of FTX, which was a major backer. The network recovered and regained activity through 2023 and 2024.
