What Is a dApp?
A dApp (decentralized application) is software that runs its core logic on a blockchain through smart contracts rather than on a centralized server. Anyone with a compatible wallet can interact with it directly, without going through a gatekeeper.
How dApps Differ from Regular Apps
Traditional apps run on servers controlled by a company, which can change the rules, restrict access, or shut down. A dApp runs on-chain: the smart contracts that power it are public, immutable, and executable by anyone. The front-end interface can still be taken down, but the underlying protocol continues to function.
What dApps Do
DeFi protocols are the most active category: DEXes, lending platforms, and yield aggregators are all dApps. NFT marketplaces are dApps. Launchpads that manage token distributions on-chain are dApps. Any Solana tool that executes trades, manages liquidity, or distributes tokens through a contract is a dApp, even if it looks like an ordinary website.
Safety When Using dApps
Always verify the official URL before connecting your wallet. Phishing sites mimic popular dApps to get you to approve malicious transactions. Use a wallet that displays human-readable transaction summaries. Consider a separate wallet with small funds for testing unfamiliar dApps, keeping your main holdings in a cold wallet.

Connect a compatible crypto wallet to the dApp’s interface, then sign transactions as prompted. The interface is a front-end; the actual execution happens on-chain.
The interface can be phished, and smart contract bugs are real risks. Always use the official URL, check transaction details before signing, and look for contract audits before using a new protocol.
A regular website is controlled by its owner and can be changed or shut down. A dApp’s on-chain smart contract logic runs independently and cannot be taken offline unilaterally.
